when is it appropriate to resign in backgammon in a 7 point match?
In a recent 7 point match game, the score was 1 to 6, my favor. When the next game appeared to be lost, my opponent resigned, thus giving the match to me.

I suggested that he resigned because of his frustration and his ability to come from behind. Because backgammon is a game of reversals, it was entirely possible he might have won, but by resigning, it gave me a ‘hollow’ victory and a somewhat unsatisfying feeling of winning the match.

It is never correct to resign in backgammon due to the match score, but might be correct to resign due to a totally lost board position.

You don’t say what the cube level was in the last game; but in any case even if your opponent were to win you would still be leading either 6-2 or 6-3, leaving his match winning chances at 15-18%.

Maybe he was tired or overestimated the number of games required: at 2-6 down he would need to win a maximum of 3 more games, and maybe only 1 if he won the next with a backgammon.

I always play on as long as winning chances are greater than 0%.
In a ‘contact’ position there is always the chance of a winning shot, and in a race a few doubles can turn things around.

I play mainly in tournaments and once found myself in a similar situation to your opponent. I was 0-6 down in a 7 point match, won the crawford game, then a doubled gammon to make the score 5-6. My opponent exercised his ‘free drop’ in the next, and I won the final game to win the match: in total only 2 wins were needed to recover from the gloomy 1-6 scoreline.

Yours was hardly a ‘hollow victory’: you must have played well to get 6-1 ahead in the first place.
